Movies I Wish They'd Remake

Hollywood is running out of creativity. They don't know what to do, so they endlessly remake movies that sold well previously.

If they're going to remake movies, I'd rather they remake the ones that need to be remade because they're so dated, not just the ones that did well.

Here's a few movies I wish they'd remake:
  • Arsenic and Old Lace
  • The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
  • Sergeant York
  • Who's Minding the Mint?
  • To Hell and Back
  • Safe at Home!
  • The Jackie Robinson Story
I'm sure there's a ton more. What movies do you wish they'd remake?

oh come on now though, you can't redo To Hell and Back. Audey Murphy played himself in his own story.

Sergeant York redone might be cool, but the casting would have to be just right to match the awesomeness of Gary Cooper.

And he did an awesome job in it. But since he's dead, we'll have to have someone else try it. The story's too good to let rust in some Hollywood vault.

Who should play Sgt. York?
To Hell and Back aside, the Sgt. York actor question is intriguing.
It needs to be an actor that looks somewhat ageless, bordering on the young.
I posed the question to a friend and he suggested Christian Bale. I could see it possibly happening. How he would do as a tennessee hick, I don't know.
My other thought would be a young Tom Hanks.

Those ellipses mean I was trolling through IMDB and I think I have a winner for you: Chris Evans, the guy who played Captain America. He even looks like Gary Cooper.
Boom. You're welcome.
Great pick. If I ever make a movie, you're in charge of casting.
I'm going to hold you to that. It's like I just won the lottery.
War Games (the update would probably use Facebook)

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (apparently Matthew Broderick movies are dated)

2001: A Space Odyssey (what would the new year be? 2041?)

I would also say The Ten Commandments, since the special effects aren't so special anymore, but I don't know that I want them messing with a classic.

I would be all for a remake of the 10 Commandments.

Maybe they could make it not boring and not two days long!
I read this week that they are remaking War Games. Your wish is granted.
I concur with Ferris Bueller's Day Off (one of my faves) and War Games. Instead of Facebook, use Halo or one of those other violent video games I won't let my 14 year old play. (I'm a horrible mother. Just ask him.)
Since I tend to enjoy "dated" movies and tv shows, I'm not sure I could list any I'd want to be remade. The only positive I can think of right now would be that the remake could be so awful that the original would be even more appealing.

That said, my rule for remakes -- or for pretty much any movie -- is that it has a better shot of being halfway decent if it doesn't have big stars in it. Big stars ruin movies because it's harder to see the character through the star. Band of Brothers is one of my favorite productions of all time, and one of its best attributes is that its cast didn't feature a major star. (The most recognizable name was David Schwimmer, and he had only a tiny short-lived role.) It blows Saving Private Ryan -- a movie filled with big stars -- out of the water in part because it's easier to believe the actors are who they're supposed to be.

In the interest of full disclosure: as a big fan of the original Hawaii Five-0 series, I do still enjoy the remake running right now. But it's nowhere near as good as the original, even though the original is just about as "dated" as it gets. That's why I'm hesitant to throw around the term "dated" -- it casts old productions in a negative light when their age is more an asset than a liability.

This is why Hollywood needs to give us a call for the next Starsky and Hutch reboot.
Would you be Starsky or Hutch?
Never saw it, so take your pick.
Er...I'm not too familiar with it, either. The good news is that it just came on the schedule of our retro tv channel, so I can get familiar with it.
Man - I LOVE movies - but honestly I'd have to think about that one - some of the remakes have been less than okay - so I hesitate. There's usually nothing like the original - with the exceptions being "Meet Joe Black" the original "Death takes a Holiday" is quite lame. And I do love the remake of "Sabrina" with Harrison Ford - as opposed to the original with Humphrey Bogart.

I don't worry too much about remakes being garbage - most of what's out these days is garbage anyway. If the remake stinks, you still have the "dated" original.

But if they surprise you and make a great, updated version of the story you love, now you have two winners.

And that's the definition of a win-win.
I think they should remake the second Twilight movie. In this one, Bella gets eaten by wolves. That chick is annoying.

You just won the Internet, Kathy!
They should remake Titanic. That ending was so depressing.

Never saw it. One of my life's greatest accomplishments.
I think they should remake Rocky V and Indiana Jones IV. They should remake them so they don't stink up an otherwise great collection of movies.

They don't need to remake either!

Rocky V - just as bad as Rocky I-IV...I assume, since I didn't make it through the first one.

Indiana Jones IV - Everyone's upset about the aliens. Thinks it was too weird. Go back and watch the other three; they're just as weird. Indiana Jones IV did a great job recreating the look and feel of the originals. I think part of the problem is we watched those when we were younger and didn't analyze things as much.

Ok, let the flaming begin...
I think they should remake Green Lantern with better actors, better special effects, and a less crappy hero, like Batman or Superman.

Haven't seen it. Is it even worth renting?
No. He fights a giant poop monster.
