If they're going to remake movies, I'd rather they remake the ones that need to be remade because they're so dated, not just the ones that did well.
Here's a few movies I wish they'd remake:
- Arsenic and Old Lace
- The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
- Sergeant York
- Who's Minding the Mint?
- To Hell and Back
- Safe at Home!
- The Jackie Robinson Story
I'm sure there's a ton more. What movies do you wish they'd remake?

Sergeant York redone might be cool, but the casting would have to be just right to match the awesomeness of Gary Cooper.

Who should play Sgt. York?

It needs to be an actor that looks somewhat ageless, bordering on the young.
I posed the question to a friend and he suggested Christian Bale. I could see it possibly happening. How he would do as a tennessee hick, I don't know.
My other thought would be a young Tom Hanks.

Those ellipses mean I was trolling through IMDB and I think I have a winner for you: Chris Evans, the guy who played Captain America. He even looks like Gary Cooper.
Boom. You're welcome.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (apparently Matthew Broderick movies are dated)
2001: A Space Odyssey (what would the new year be? 2041?)
I would also say The Ten Commandments, since the special effects aren't so special anymore, but I don't know that I want them messing with a classic.

Maybe they could make it not boring and not two days long!

That said, my rule for remakes -- or for pretty much any movie -- is that it has a better shot of being halfway decent if it doesn't have big stars in it. Big stars ruin movies because it's harder to see the character through the star. Band of Brothers is one of my favorite productions of all time, and one of its best attributes is that its cast didn't feature a major star. (The most recognizable name was David Schwimmer, and he had only a tiny short-lived role.) It blows Saving Private Ryan -- a movie filled with big stars -- out of the water in part because it's easier to believe the actors are who they're supposed to be.
In the interest of full disclosure: as a big fan of the original Hawaii Five-0 series, I do still enjoy the remake running right now. But it's nowhere near as good as the original, even though the original is just about as "dated" as it gets. That's why I'm hesitant to throw around the term "dated" -- it casts old productions in a negative light when their age is more an asset than a liability.

But if they surprise you and make a great, updated version of the story you love, now you have two winners.
And that's the definition of a win-win.

Rocky V - just as bad as Rocky I-IV...I assume, since I didn't make it through the first one.
Indiana Jones IV - Everyone's upset about the aliens. Thinks it was too weird. Go back and watch the other three; they're just as weird. Indiana Jones IV did a great job recreating the look and feel of the originals. I think part of the problem is we watched those when we were younger and didn't analyze things as much.
Ok, let the flaming begin...
