Recently one of our vendors sent out a survey regarding power planning. They asked for tips for other network administrators. Here's what they got:
- Make sure you have enough power cords.
- Make sure you have enough power outlets.
- If you don't, then look into power strips. Brilliant idea, Mr. Power Strip Inventor!
- UPS units are a great way to ensure uptime in the case of a power outage.
- Unless it's a really long power outage, then you're out of luck.
- While you're in the dark, you'll probably wish you had remembered your flashlight.
What did I miss?

Make sure that you know the location of electrical panel that controls the outlet that you're about to trip. And that someone has a key to get to it.
Are you saying Mr. Power Strip Inventor is part of the REAL MEN OF GEEEENIUS?
Rick - Being prepared has no part of my planning!
Sarge - Yes, yes I am.
The school where I teach has classrooms to seat 30 students, but when I teach computer classes there, there are only two outlets (located in the back of the room about 8 feet from the closest student) and one up front that I use. They recently remodeled and moved the outlets from the back of the room to one on each side.
Thankfully, I was able to expense a trip to Lowes for power strips, because the laptops they provide have about a 45-minute battery life when the course is 4 hours long.
The only other thing I would include would be to check your power ratings and make sure you're not overloading any individual outlet. Our QA lab used to have a power strip plugged into another power strip plugged into a third power strip. That's some awesome QA work there.
Wait...what's wrong with that?
I have three power strips daisy-chained together right here at my desk.
At least I don't do that for the servers, right?
Headlamps...everyone loves headlamps
Great idea, Matt...I'll order some pronto.
Can't be too prepared!
Ask Sgt. Wolverine how well power strips and carpet mix.
They mix this well!
Ah, the infamous couch-burning incident!
Were you there in person for that, SG? Or did Sarge just send you pics afterwards?
